                         sensores remotos orbitais foi investigada para ambiente montanhoso 
                         da Prov{\'{\i}}ncia Mineral de Caraj{\'a}s (Par{\'a}). Modelos 
                         digitais de eleva{\c{c}}{\~a}o ou DEMs (digital elevation 
                         models) radargram{\'e}tricos (relativo e absoluto) foram obtidos 
                         de est{\'e}reo-pares Fine Mode do RADARSAT-1 (F2, F5) e avaliados 
                         em termos de informa{\c{c}}{\~a}o altim{\'e}trica. A 
                         extra{\c{c}}{\~a}o dos DEMs foi baseada no modelo 
                         geom{\'e}trico RADARSAT-1 Specific, dispon{\'{\i}}vel no 
                         software OESE (OrthoEngine Satellite Edition, PCI Geomatics). A 
                         informa{\c{c}}{\~a}o planim{\'e}trica foi extra{\'{\i}}da de 
                         produtos digitais integrados Fine/ETM+ Landsat 7. 
                         Informa{\c{c}}{\~o}es planialtim{\'e}tricas de precis{\~a}o 
                         foram obtidas de campanha de campo com DGPS (differential global 
                         positioning system) e usadas ou como GCPs (ground control points), 
                         para o modelamento do DEM absoluto e na 
                         ortorretifica{\c{c}}{\~a}o dos dados de radar e {\'o}pticos, ou 
                         como ICPs (independent check points), para a estimativa de 
                         acur{\'a}cia planialtim{\'e}trica da carta topogr{\'a}fica. A 
                         pesquisa mostrou que a acur{\'a}cia planialtim{\'e}trica da 
                         carta topogr{\'a}fica atendeu aos requisitos de mapeamento na 
                         escala de semi-detalhe (1:100.000), classe B, do PEC (padr{\~a}o 
                         de exatid{\~a}o cartogr{\'a}fica) nacional. A 
                         investiga{\c{c}}{\~a}o foi conduzida atrav{\'e}s de um projeto 
                         de pesquisa entre o INPE e a empresa Geoambiente,com recursos da 
                         FAPESP e apoio da CVRD. ABSTRACT: The feasibility to generate 
                         topographic maps based on orbital remote sensing data was 
                         investigated for mountainous terrain of the Caraj{\'a}s Mineral 
                         Province (Par{\'a} State), Brazilian Amazon. Radargrammetric 
                         digital elevation models (relative and absolute DEMs) were 
                         obtained from Fine-Mode RADARSAT-1 stereo-pairs (F2, F5) and 
                         evaluated with regard to their altimetric information. The DEM 
                         extractions were based on a geometric modeling (RADARSAT-1 
                         Specific) available at the OESE software (PCI Geomatics). The 
                         planimetric features were extracted from digital integrated 
                         Fine/ETM+ Landsat 7 products. Precise planialtimetric information 
                         from DGPS (differential global positioning system) field campaign 
                         was used as GCPs (ground control points), for the modeling of the 
                         absolute DEM and the orthorectification of the radar and optical 
                         data, or as ICP (independent check points), for the calculation of 
                         planialtimetric accuracy of the topographic map. The 
                         planialtimetric accuracy of the topographic map has met the 
                         requirements for 1:100,000-map (semi-detailed scale), class B, as 
                         requested by the Brazilian Standard for Cartographic Accuracy 
                         (PEC). The investigation was carried out as an INPE-Geoambientes 
                         project with funds from FAPESP and supported by CVRD.",
